Farmland to suburb between Torrens Road and Port Road
West Croydon lies about 5 km west of the city, between Torrens Road and Port Road. It was farming land until the early 1920s; in 1925 a large part of East View Farm, worked since 1840, was sold and the suburb began, with infill continuing into the 1970s. MJ McInerney, Carnarvon and Croydon Avenue reserves are its parks. The 2021 Census counts 85.6% separate houses, 56.8% with three bedrooms, and 70.4% of homes owned outright or with a mortgage.
A house built here between the 1920s and the 1970s usually drains through earthenware or early PVC, now 50 to 100 years old. Roots from backyard trees find the joints, and Adelaide's reactive clay opens them further as it shrinks and swells through the seasons. With most homes owner-occupied, people want the drain fixed properly, so we find the cause, then clear, film or repair it as the pipe needs.
- Planting a tree? Ask us where the sewer line runs first; roots travel a long way to reach a leaking earthenware joint.
- Wipes, even flushable ones, belong in the bin. They catch on roots in older lines and build a blockage quickly.
- Keep the outside overflow gully clear of pavers, mulch and pots; on an older house it's the first place a main-line blockage shows.
