Elizabeth
Under the planned city's central streets
Elizabeth sits 24 km north of the Adelaide city centre. The South Australian Housing Trust bought 1,200 hectares of farmland between Salisbury and Smithfield and founded its planned satellite city here in 1955, and this suburb is the city's centre, with Ridley Reserve on its southern edge. The Trust built mostly in brick. In 2021 the suburb had 1,033 residents, and its homes were 68.7% separate houses, 17.9% semi-detached and 11.4% flats.
The oldest drains here date from the city's first years, so they are now around 70 years old. Lines of that era are earthenware or early PVC, and earthenware carries far more joints than a modern plastic run. Adelaide's clay shrinks in summer and swells in winter, and that movement works old joints loose. More than half the homes are rented, so we explain what we find to the owner and quote the fix.
