Big old houses north of the Park Lands
Medindie is a small inner-northern suburb in the Town of Walkerville, framed by the Park Lands, Robe Terrace, Northcote Terrace, Nottage Terrace and Main North Road. It joined Walkerville council in 1855, and one of its houses, The Briars, dates from 1856. Homes here are large: the 2021 Census counted 384 occupied dwellings, 91.1% of them separate houses, with 58.7% on four or more bedrooms. More than half were owned outright.
Houses that size and that old mean long drain runs from several bathrooms, a kitchen and a laundry, often through earthenware laid generations ago. Old clay pipe is brittle and has a joint at every short length, and roots have had a long time to find them. Adelaide's reactive clay moves seasonally around the line.
