A river suburb with an 1838 start
Klemzig was settled in 1838 by German Lutheran migrants on land bordering the River Torrens. It was renamed Gaza in 1917 and took back its original name in 1935. The Housing Trust built some of its prefabricated timber houses here between 1950 and 1954, and many were rented out. Torrens Linear Park and the O-Bahn now run along the southern side. In 2021, 68% of 2,718 occupied homes were separate houses, 14.2% semi-detached or townhouses and 17.4% flats.
That makes Klemzig a suburb of mixed drains: earthenware or early PVC under 1950s Trust homes, newer PVC under later units, and shared lines wherever homes are grouped. River red gums and blue gums grow along the Torrens banks, and big trees anywhere send roots towards water in old joints.
