Once Chicago, next to the old sewage farm
Kilburn lies in Adelaide's inner north, a short drive from the city, between Prospect, Blair Athol and Regency Park. It was named Chicago in 1893 and renamed in 1930, after the post office warned that letters could end up in America. Next door, the Islington Sewage Farm, at what is now Regency Park, treated the city's sewage from 1881 to 1966. In 2021, 45.7% of Kilburn's homes were separate houses, 42.4% semi-detached or townhouses and 11.0% flats.
Old and new sit side by side here. Older houses can still run on earthenware lines, whose joints roots and Adelaide's reactive clay open over time. Newer townhouses, like the 14 Little Chicago homes finished in 2022, have PVC that blocks with fat and wipes. Pairs and townhouse groups can share a line.
