Gilles Plains

Trust-era homes, 70-year-old drains

Gilles Plains lies about 10 km north-east of the city between Grand Junction, North East and Sudholz roads, shared by Port Adelaide Enfield and Tea Tree Gully councils. Before the houses, it was farmland: in 1874 South Australia's biggest hay farm was here. The suburb was carved off Hillcrest, and in 1950-54 the Housing Trust erected imported, prefabricated timber homes here, part of several thousand across the inner north-east. Today houses make up 77.5% of its 1,513 occupied homes, with flats and units at 13.3%.

Each of those early Trust homes had a kitchen, laundry, bathroom and toilet, and their drains are now around 70 years old. Lines of that age are commonly earthenware, with a joint every short length and decades of root growth. Adelaide's reactive clay adds movement every summer and winter. We clear these older drains, inspect them with a camera, and repair the sections that have failed.

  • In an older earthenware line, bin wipes, sanitary products and cooking fat. Roots at the joints catch them first.
  • Before winter, clear the stormwater pits and downpipe outlets of leaves, so roof water gets away from the house.
  • A big tree near an old drain line is worth mentioning when you book. Its roots go looking for water at the joints.
