Gawler West
Two eras between the river and the railway
Gawler West lies about 43 km north of Adelaide, between the Gawler River and the Gawler railway line, on the edge of a town founded in 1839. Its first streets were a Housing Trust subdivision after the Second World War, filling a gap in the township. In the 2000s a second subdivision went in on the river flat beside the Gawler Bypass. The 2021 Census counted 975 residents in 445 occupied homes, 43.4% of them semi-detached.
That gives the suburb two kinds of drain. The postwar homes sit on earthenware or early PVC lines from the postwar decades, where roots and moving clay open the joints. The river-flat homes have PVC, which blocks with fat, wipes and silt instead. Most of the year's rain falls in winter, and that is when stormwater pits and downpipes get tested. With 45.8% of homes rented, we report clearly to owners and managers.
- In a postwar Trust pair, tell us if the neighbour has had drain trouble too. Pairs of that era can share a line.
- On the river flat, keep leaf litter and grass clippings away from stormwater grates before the winter rain arrives.
- Landlords: when you book, give us the approver's details and the tenant's contact, and we'll arrange access around them.
