Mawson Lakes
A planned suburb with two water systems
Mawson Lakes, 12 km north of the city, stands on The Levels, a sheep breeding property founded around 1876. It was developed from 1998 to 2011 around two man-made lakes, in villages of detached, semi-detached and terrace homes. It also has a dual water system: lilac pipes and fittings carry Class A recycled water, from what was Australia's largest self-contained water recycling scheme when it went in. In 2021, 13,794 people lived here and 38.6% of homes were rented.
The drains here are PVC and under 30 years old, so roots are rarely the story. Fat, wipes and things that should never be flushed are. Terraces and semi-detached homes can share a line, and two-storey homes run waste down from upstairs bathrooms, so one blockage can show in several places.
