Kensington Gardens
Around the reserve and its creek
Kensington Gardens was farmland until a bank bought the section in 1906 and subdivided it in 1910, around the time the suburb took its present name. About 40 acres had already been set aside as a public recreation ground, now Kensington Wama, and Stonyfell Creek runs through it on its way to Second Creek. Today the suburb mixes houses (46.0% of dwellings in 2021) with flats and apartments (32.9%), and three in ten homes are rented.
Houses built after the 1910 subdivision were given earthenware drains, the standard of their day, and the oldest of those pipes have had a century to collect roots at the joints. Flats and units add shared lines, where one household's fat or wipes becomes everyone's problem. Burnside's creeks run partly in pipes and culverts, and winter rain tests every stormwater pit and downpipe. We clear, inspect and repair the lot.
- Live in a block of units? Ask the neighbours before you book. If their sinks are slow too, the shared line is the likely culprit, and we'll start there.
- Scrape plates into the bin, not the sink. Fat sets hard inside older, rougher pipe.
- Big gardens and street trees fill stormwater pits with leaf litter. Lift the grates and clear them before the winter rain.
