Long drains on foothills blocks
Highbury dates from 1857, and until 1930 it answered to the District Council of Highercombe. Now part of Tea Tree Gully, it runs from the River Torrens on its southern side up into the Adelaide Hills Face Zone at its eastern end. Its 1870s aqueduct, which fed Hope Valley Reservoir until 2008, is now a reserve with a 4 km shared trail. The 2021 Census found 2,482 occupied homes, nearly all separate houses (97.1%), and 41.6% owned without a mortgage.
Sloping foothills blocks mean long sewer runs that fall steeply in places, and stormwater that moves fast in winter. River red gums and blue gums grow along the Torrens banks, and big trees anywhere send roots looking for water in old earthenware joints. We clear blockages, put a camera through troubled lines, and repair the sections that have failed.
- On a sloping block, the outside overflow gully often sits on the low side of the house. Find it before you need it and keep the grate clear.
- Big trees near the drain line? Mention them when you book. Roots are the first suspect in an older line that keeps blocking.
- After a heavy winter downpour, check the stormwater pits at the bottom of the block for silt and leaves.
