South Plympton
Forbes, Harcourt Gardens and Vermont
South Plympton runs from the Glenelg tram line south to Wood Street, with Marion Road on its western side. It was once three smaller suburbs, Forbes, Harcourt Gardens and Vermont, joined under one name in 1947. Harcourt Gardens was subdivided in 1922, with a 10-acre recreation ground among natural forest trees secured for locals. The 2021 Census counts 61.0% separate houses, 21.9% flats and 17.2% semi-detached homes, with 30.0% rented.
That patchwork means pipes of different ages: earthenware under homes on the older blocks, PVC under newer houses and flats. Old earthenware is brittle and has many joints, and Adelaide's reactive clay moves it season to season, which is how roots get in. Flats often share one line. We find which pipe your home drains through, then clear it, put a camera through it or quote its repair.
- In an older South Plympton house, keep fat and wipes out of the drains: earthenware joints with roots in them catch both.
- Living in a flat? Tell us when you book if other flats in the block are backing up, and who looks after the shared line.
- Clear leaves from downpipe outlets and stormwater pits before winter. Most of Adelaide's rain falls then, and a silted pit overflows onto paths and lawns.
