A bottle from the supermarket is tempting when the shower won’t drain. Here’s why it rarely fixes the real blockage, and what to do instead.

Chemical drain openers use corrosive acids or alkalis to break down soft build-up such as hair and grease in a single drain. They do nothing for tree roots, wipes, silt or a pipe that has cracked or sagged, which are the usual causes of a blocked sewer line.
Excessive use of chemical drain cleaners can damage pipes. In an old earthenware line or a corroded joint, that’s the last thing it needs.
When the chemical fails, the drain is still blocked and now holds a corrosive liquid. Tell us what you’ve poured in before we start, so we can work safely.
Stop running water into the drain. Check whether it’s one fixture or several, and look at the outside gully. Then call us with what you’ve seen: we confirm the visit and clear it with a jetter or a drain machine.
